Sjoukje Dijkstra, the first Dutch athlete to win a gold medal at Winter Olympics, dies at 82
Sjoukje Dijkstra, the figure skater who in 1964 became the first Dutch athlete to win a gold medal at the Winter Olympics, has died at the age of 82. Dijkstra's daughter, Katja Kossmayer Dijkstra, said in a Facebook post that her mother “passed away peacefully at home” on Thursday. Dijkstra skated at three Winter Olympics, finishing 12th in Cortina d’Ampezzo in 1956 before winning a silver medal at Squaw Valley in 1960.

The favored French candidacy to host the 2030 Winter Olympics is in talks with the Netherlands and Italy to stage speed skating races. Brazil gains Winter Olympics medal prospect after skier Lucas Braathen switches from Norway
Brazil has a top Winter Olympics medal prospect in Alpine skiing after the World Cup slalom champion last season, Lucas Braathen, announced on Thursday he will start to compete for his mother’s home nation. Braathen, whose father is Norwegian, split from the Nordic nation’s ski team on the eve of the season last October in a dispute over having freedom to work with his own sponsors. SARAJEVO, Bosnia-Herzegovina (AP) — War-scarred Sarajevo is looking back to happier times from February 1984 as it celebrates the 40th anniversary of staging a successful Winter Olympics. “Our Olympic spirit is alive," said Izet Radjo, president of the Bosnia-Herzegovina Olympic Committee, with Sarajevo eying a bid to host the 2032 Winter Youth Olympic Games.
